Salt Festival
Big Bone Lick State Historic Site
Journey back in time as Big Bone Lick returns to days long past.  The festival features demonstrations of pioneer living and skills, frontier ingenuity, traditions, and lifeways.  Browse the crafter's corner to seen the many handmade and hand-crafted items for sale and find lots of good eats at the food court.  Enjoy folk and bluegrass music, listen to a storyteller, view prehistoric Ice Age artifacts, and watch a blacksmith working red-hot iron.  See how salt was extracted from the waters of Big Bone, watch a flintknapper make a stone point, and discover how bison hair was spun into yarn.

While visiting the park, be sure to drop by the park's museum and visitor's center to see some of the "big bones"; a shuttle can will transport event-goers to and from the festival field to the center at regular intervals.  For more info call (859) 384-3522 or email Dean.Henson@ky.gov.

'Merry & Bright' Christmas Tours

My Old Kentucky Home
Guides in Victorian hoop skirts and gentleman in tailcoats sing the song “My Old Kentucky Home,” on your tour of Kentucky’s most famous landmark decorated for Christmas, My Old Kentucky Home!

The mansion is adorned and decorated with beautiful 12′ tall Christmas trees, each with a unique Kentucky theme in every room, including the Commonwealth Tree, Meadows in the Bloom, Birds Make Music All the Day, & more! Garlands, mistletoe, stockings full of toys, the annual gingerbread model of the historic mansion made by our pastry chef, and nutcrackers stand guard over the mansion’s many rooms!

Experience the traditional, and sometimes odd, Christmas customs of the Victorian era at My Old Kentucky Home! Learn the origins of the Christmas tree, how mistletoe became famous for exchanging kisses, the tradition of the yule log, the history of the Christmas pickle, the legends of Father Christmas and Santa Claus, and the bizarre Victorian traditions including Krampus who punished bad children, the legend of a spirit horse named Mary Lwyd that challenges people to a game of rhymes, and learn why Victorians sent Christmas cards featuring sword fighting frogs & frozen birds to each another during the holidays. As you move forward to each room, experience a different era of Christmas, starting from colonial times, the early and late Victorian periods, all the way to the roaring 20’s when the mansion was last owned by the Rowan family. This highly interesting tour isn’t one you want to miss and it’s great for the whole family!
