Monroe County Heritage Festival: The Civil War Era

In honor of the Bicentennial Celebration of Abraham Lincoln's Birthday this annual event will focus on the Civil War era. The activities will begin Friday April 25, 2008 with a Blue & Gray Banquet. Icebreakers will pit the "North against the South". Monroe County native and author Dr. Lynwood Montell will be the keynote speaker. Saturday April 26th a variety of activities will be held at the park. Interactive living history presentations on "Spinning and Weaving" with Maria Hummel, "One Room Schools" with Butch Hauri, "Quilts and Quilting" with Sheila Rush and more will be held throughout the day. A Civil War Show and Tell will allow participants the opportunity to share their Civil War artifacts. A variety of children's games will be offered. A potluck "dinner on the ground" will be the fare for the day. Drinks and ham will be furnished. An original play, "A Civil War Love Story", based on the letters of John Hunt Morgan and Mattie Ready Morgan will be the highlight of the festival. Attendees to all the events are encouraged to come in period accurate clothing.
Geocacheing - "Trail of Caches"

"Old Mulkey Meetinghouse State Historic Site will partner with Joe Harrison Carter Elem. School to host a "trail of caches" on Sat. May 3, 2008 in Tompkinsville, Ky. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the school's student reward program. Since Old Mulkey doesn't have developed trails this geocaching event will take participants to unique sites between JHC and the park. Students from JHC will be creating the majority of the caches and when possible helping to hide them! On site registration will begin at 10:00 CT at Old Mulkey. There will be several first-to-find caches, as well as a prize for the most caches found. We guarantee at least 30 caches to find. CornHole Tournament

This double elimination tournament will follow the American CornHole Association Rules and is open to players of all ages. Registration is $15.00 per team if received by Oct. 13, 2008, $20.00 per team the day of the event. Teams registering by Oct. 13th will receive a pair of "Commemorative CornHole Bags". Corn trophies as well as prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Tournament Winners & Runners-up, Most Hole-Ins, Longest Hole-In Streak and Best Decorated Boards. Spectators and players are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair.
Halloween in the Park

The evening will consist of a Pet Costume Parade, Children's Costume Parade (0 to 12 years), Pumpkin Smashing, Jack-o-Lantern Contests, Fortune telling, Haunted Trail, Ghost Storytelling Contests, and more. Ghost stories are limited to 10 minutes and must be appropriate for all age listeners. Dr. Lynwood Montell, Monroe County Native and Kentucky author will be the guest storyteller. Prizes will be given to all parade participants, as well as the winners in the jack-o-lantern and ghost storytelling contests. Admission is $4.00 and includes a hotdog dinner.
