Planned Hiking

Lace up those hiking shoes and get ready to hit the trails! We've got miles of planned hiking activities at many state parks across Kentucky. Some parks host monthly hikes while others hold special hiking events where registration is required. Continue scrolling down for a look at what's coming up in the fall of 2018!


Barren River Lake State Resort Park


Monthly Hiking Series, Oct. 13, Nov. 10
Join us for our monthly hiking series at Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Some hikes will require hikers to drive to other locations within Barren River Lake SRP or nearby state nature preserves. Dress for the weather and bring your own water, snacks, and hiking stick. This free hike is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Hikes will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain or hazardous weather/driving conditions. Call 270-646-2151.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park


Outdoor Family Adventure, Oct. 5-6, Nov. 23-24
Bring the entire family for an exciting weekend at Cumberland Falls. There will be various types of activities that the whole family can enjoy such as hikes to unique natural arches and waterfalls, archery, fire tower walks, storytelling and more! John James Audubon State Park, Henderson


Creatures of the Night Hike, Oct. 27
Nature's Switch to Winter Hike, Nov. 10

It’s almost Halloween—are you afraid of things that go BUMP in the night? Join the park naturalists, if you dare, for this After Dark Hike on Oct. 27. It’s a scare-less event, but you’ll learn about some of the fascinating and perhaps creepy creatures that make their way through the nocturnal hours of the night. Dress according to the weather, so you'll be comfortable on this 2.1-mile hike over hills and a staircase, in the dark. You may bring a flashlight if you wish. Admission is $2, paid at the gate. *Cancelled if raining. Call 270-826-4424.

Lake Barkley State Resort Park


Nature Photography Hike, Oct. 13
Join a naturalist at Lake Barkley State Resort Park on October 13 for another hike in our monthly hiking series. The focus of October’s hike will be capturing the colors of autumn. Participants are encouraged to try their hand at nature photography and to stick around for lunch, where they can share their photographs with their fellow hikers. The hike starts at 10 a.m. (CST) and will depart from the lobby of the lodge. No reservations are necessary to participate in 2nd Saturday Hikes. Natural Bridge State Resort Park


Trail Trek Series, Nov. 17
The Natural Bridge Trail Trek Series is comprised of individual guided treks that range in distance from 4-8 miles. On each date, a unique route through Natural Bridge State Resort Park will be hiked. All treks depart at 9 a.m. from the Hemlock Lodge lobby. This is a great way to experience all the trails at Natural Bridge throughout the year! Pre-registration is required. The cost is $8/person/trek. Nolin Lake State Park


Forest Succession Hike, Oct. 20
Join us at Nolin Lake State Park for our seasonal hiking series on the Brier Creek Trail System! Each hike will feature a different topic of discussion. The hike starts at 10 a.m. (CST) and will depart from Brier Creek Trailhead in Nolin Lake State Park. Please dress for the weather. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is strongly suggested. This free hike is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Hikes will be canceled in the event of heavy rain or hazardous weather/driving conditions. Call park for more info at 270-286-4240.

Nolin Lake State Park


Winter Hike, Nov. 10
It's really starting to get a lot colder in the park and big seasonal changes are just around the corner. As we transition into winter season here at Nolin Lake State Park, join a park naturalist on the Brier Creek Trails and learn all about what goes on when the park gets a bit quieter. The hike starts at 10 a.m. (CST) and will depart from Brier Creek Trailhead in Nolin Lake State Park. Please dress for the weather. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is strongly suggested. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park


First Saturday Hike, Oct. 6, Nov. 3
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park will host a guided hike the 1st Saturday of every month! All hikes will meet in the lodge lobby. Hike times and trails will vary per month. Some hikes will require hikers to drive to another location on the neighboring Pennyrile State Forest or nearby Wildlife Management Areas. Dress for the weather and bring your own water, snacks, and hiking stick. This hike is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Leashed dogs are welcome on the hike. Hiking sticks are available for purchase in the park’s gift shop. The hike is free and will last approximately two hours.
