Exploring 44 Kentucky State Parks: A Journey of Celebration and Discovery

For Laura Scarborough, the 100-year celebration of Kentucky State Parks became the perfect opportunity to embark on a remarkable journey—visiting all 44 state parks. Inspired by a lifelong love for these parks, Laura was driven by the desire to honor the legacy of Kentucky’s natural beauty and history.

A Childhood Inspiration

The idea for this adventure began long ago, with a fourth-grade scrapbook project about Kentucky. This early connection to the state’s parks laid the foundation for a deeper exploration. As the 100-year anniversary approached, Laura set her goal: to visit all 44 parks before the summer's end. This journey was not just about exploration but also about reflecting on the joy and beauty the parks had provided over the years.

Planning the Ultimate Park Tour

Planning such a comprehensive tour required careful organization. Armed with a Kentucky Visitor’s Guide, state park brochures, and a detailed spreadsheet, Laura began her journey. She categorized the parks by region and type, and planned trips to visit multiple parks in a single outing whenever possible. While most visits were meticulously planned, spontaneity also played a role, with impromptu trips filling free weekends and days off.

Unexpected Joys and Memorable Moments

The journey was filled with unforgettable experiences, from witnessing wildlife like bears and bald eagles to enjoying a peaceful sunrise at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. Carter Caves State Resort Park emerged as a surprising favorite, with its impressive cave systems and unique natural features.

Challenges, such as losing cell service, turned into opportunities for Laura to disconnect and fully immerse in the park experience. This journey deepened her appreciation for Kentucky’s diverse landscapes, from the flat waterlands of the west to the rugged terrain of the Cumberland Gap.

Lessons in Living in the Moment

Throughout the journey, Laura made a conscious effort to live in the moment. Sometimes, she silenced her phone and put it away to focus entirely on the park experience rather than capturing it. This approach led to some of the most cherished memories of the trip.

A Deeper Connection to Conservation

The journey also strengthened Laura’s commitment to environmental conservation. Experiencing Kentucky’s natural beauty firsthand highlighted the importance of preserving these spaces for future generations. The trip included various outdoor activities, from kayaking to hiking, reinforcing her deep connection to the land.

Advice for Fellow Adventurers

For those considering a similar journey, Laura’s advice is simple: just do it. Life is short, and there’s no better time to explore Kentucky’s natural wonders. Essential preparations include bringing sunblock, bug spray, and a pair of dry shoes—lessons learned the hard way!

Looking Ahead: New Adventures on the Horizon

With all 44 parks visited, Laura’s journey is far from over. Next up is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, along with plans to visit all 120 counties in the state—ensuring a return to many of the beloved parks.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To the dedicated employees of Kentucky State Parks, Laura extends a heartfelt thank you. From knowledgeable tour guides to talented chefs, every interaction added to the richness of her experience. And, of course, a special shout-out to the chefs for their delicious Kentucky Hot Browns—a perfect end to a day of exploration.

This journey through Kentucky’s state parks was not just a celebration of the parks themselves but also a celebration of what it means to truly connect with the natural world. As Laura sums it up: “Discovering Kentucky’s State Parks was like finding the state’s best-kept secrets one trail at a time.”
