Kentucky State Parks on the Kentucky African American Heritage Trail

As part of a powerful new initiative by the Kentucky Department of Tourism, three Kentucky State Parks have been recognized on the Kentucky African American Heritage Trail, a journey that highlights the courage, culture, and contributions of African Americans across the Commonwealth.

These featured parks represent untold stories and enduring legacies that deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

Established in 1951, Historic Cherokee State Park was the first Blacks-only state park in the Southern U.S. and the third in the nation. It was celebrated as "the finest colored vacation site in the South." Following desegregation, the park was closed in the 1960s. Today, the grounds are part of Kenlake State Resort Park, and the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site

Location: 1825 Battlefield Rd, Perryville, KY 40468

From 1865 to the 1930s, an African American community known as Sleettown thrived on the grounds of what is now Perryville Battlefield. This community included homes, a store, a restaurant, and a cemetery. Despite the era’s segregation, Sleettown was known for a spirit of unity where Black and White neighbors worked and socialized together. The community gradually disappeared by 1931.

Waveland State Historic Site

Location: 225 Waveland Museum Ln, Lexington, KY 40514
Phone: (859) 272-3611
Website: Waveland State Historic Site

Waveland tells the stories of both the Bryan family and the enslaved individuals who labored on the plantation. Visitors tour a Greek Revival mansion built in 1848 and explore 13 acres of preserved structures, gardens, and walking trails. The site provides a deeper understanding of Kentucky’s plantation history and those who lived it.
